Understanding Cross-Border Payment Fraud
International wire transfers are frequently targeted by fraudsters. Here is important information to help protect yourself:
Fake MT103 / PACS.008 Documents
Fraudsters often create fake payment confirmation documents (MT103, PACS.008, or similar) to convince victims that funds have been sent. Key warning signs include:
- Documents received via email or messaging apps rather than directly from your bank
- Pressure to release goods or services before funds are confirmed in your account
- Inconsistent formatting, spelling errors, or unusual bank codes
- UETR codes that cannot be verified through legitimate tracking services
- Requests to pay "fees" or "taxes" to release incoming funds
Important: A payment confirmation document (MT103/PACS.008) does NOT guarantee that funds will be credited to your account. Only trust funds that have been credited and confirmed by your own bank.
Payments Can Be Recalled
Many people do not realize that cross-border payments can be recalled by the sender before they are credited to the beneficiary account. This is exploited by fraudsters who:
- Send a legitimate payment to gain your trust
- Convince you to release goods, services, or send money back
- Recall the original payment before it is credited
Golden Rule: Never release goods, services, or send money based on payment confirmations alone. Wait until funds are fully credited and cleared in your account, and be aware that even then, fraudulent transactions may be reversed.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify the sender: Confirm the identity of anyone requesting payment or claiming to send funds.
- Use official channels: Only trust payment information from your bank's official portal or statements.
- Track payments properly: Use legitimate tracking services like Ohmyfin to verify payment status.
- Wait for cleared funds: Do not act on incoming payments until they are fully credited and cleared.
- Be suspicious of urgency: Fraudsters often create artificial time pressure to prevent careful verification.
- Report suspicious activity: Contact your bank and local authorities if you suspect fraud.
